Vote With Your Wallet: It’s Important to Support Black Owned Businesses
At Dressember we talk a lot about being conscious consumers, especially as it relates to ethical fashion. It’s important we recognize where our clothing comes from and what businesses and systems we are supporting with our money. One way we can be conscious consumers and actively anti-racist is by supporting black-owned businesses.
As a consumer, you have the ability to cast your vote for things you support by the way you spend your money. Consumers drive the market, and you have the ability to push for demand and change shopping trends with your wallet. Research shows that supporting black-owned businesses helps close the racial wealth gap, promotes equal representation, and celebrates black culture.
"Supporting [black-owned businesses] means seeing us as equals and experts and not assuming our skills, services, and creations are less than, which has been the common narrative when discussing supporting Black ideas, creativity, and business," explained Christina Blacken, founder and chief story strategist at The New Quo, a professional development and communication consultancy that helps leaders tap into the psychological power of narrative intelligence and storytelling to achieve inclusive, status quo breaking goals. "Black creators have built movements, companies, and more with little to nothing despite the odds, and there's wisdom that can be learned from that." (Business Insider)
As we continue to position ourselves as learners throughout this white privilege and advocacy series, we invite you to consider purchasing from the black-owned businesses below.
