Introducing Dressember Facebook Groups
It only takes one person to spark a change in a community. But it takes a vibrant, diverse community of advocates to carry a global anti-human trafficking movement.
We believe there’s power in community. That’s why we’re launching four new Dressember Facebook groups. We hope these groups give advocates the chance to ask the hard questions (and the fun ones), share ideas, celebrate one another and join together in the fight against human trafficking.
Dressember Educators
Do you teach? Join this group of educators fighting to end human trafficking. This is your place to connect with individuals whose love for learning informs their passion for illuminating and eliminating human exploitation.
Kearci Moir, Group Admin
Kearci started her advocate journey four years ago — the same year she began teaching high school art. Her passion for educating spills out in all she does, which is why she’s so excited to have discovered Dressember. She believes the heart of a teacher is what makes for a compelling campaign, and she’s eager to walk with this group of educators as they spread the message of justice to their unique audiences.
Dressember Students
Since the early days of Dressember, students have been a driving force for the movement. Whether you’re in high school, college or grad school, join to be inspired by students who are as excited about social justice as you are.
Abby Flood, Group Admin
My name is Abby, and I am a sophomore in college studying ministry and intercultural studies. Chicago is home for me, and I love exploring the city. The 2020 campaign will be my 3rd year advocating with Dressember and my 3rd year as a team leader! Seeking justice for all people is a cause that has been on my heart for several years and continues to grow. I believe that modern-day slavery can be ended in our lifetime. I'm looking forward to the season this year and can't wait to be inspired by all the Dressember Students out there!
Megan Montoya, Group Admin
Megan is a sophomore in college at Colorado Christian University. She has been participating in Dressember for 7 years and is passionate about pursuing work in the fight against human trafficking. She is ecstatic to be helping out this year with the Student Dressember Facebook Group and cannot wait to keep sharing Dressember's message.
Dressember Moms
If you’re advocating for human dignity with little (or not so little) ones in tow, join the online community of Dressember moms. Navigating ethical consumerism and advocacy while raising a family can be complicated; this will be a space for moms to swap ideas and encouragement.
Valarie Alviar, Group Admin
Hi, my name is Valerie. I am a Mom of three kids, two boys and a girl. Married 23 years. I work as a Nurse in the public school district of Los Angeles. I love nature and have recently found joy in running. I’m a big basketball fan/Mom. My family and I love discovering new places and to try different kinds of food and we would spontaneously drive no matter how far for hiking, beaches, food trucks, boba or even a cupcake at any given time. Very early on, we had vowed to create memories and a legacy for our kids that they will remember all of their lives. I used to think that there wasn’t much difference I can make in the world because I have so many roles and responsibilities as a Mom and wife. But it’s not about what you don’t have. You can make a change, fight for a cause, you can do anything, it starts with your will and your heart. You start at home. You start with what you have. It's not what you say but what they see. Life has taught me many things and this I teach my kids. That is to be brave, be kind, choose to see the good in others, choose to be joyful, always be grateful and to love fiercely.
Janelle Whitefield, Group Admin
I’m Janelle Whitehead - mom of a crazy year & a half-year-old gal - and full-time photographer (at least I was until COVID 🤷🏻♀️) specializing in motherhood and ethical-fashion brands. This will be my 6th year participating in Dressember, and going on 8 years of buying slave-free clothing and goods as much as possible. My husband and I are preparing to move to Dubai, and I’m excited - though very nervous - to be an advocate for ethical working conditions in a country that has legalized slave labor. As moms, sometimes we deal with problems others aren’t - like finding items our kids need for school, affording ethical clothes that they will grow out of in a month, or having early conversations on what it looks like to fight for justice. So I’m excited to be in a network of moms who want to see other mamas across the world live a life where they are able to provide for their families and are treated with respect and dignity. I’m a huge extrovert & I’m fairly sure I’m an Enneagram 2w3, though every meme account on Instagram tells me I’m a 4. I love puppy memes, dinosaurs, ice cream, 70’s fashion, and geeking out about the history of/science behind coffee.
Dressember Men
The “dress” in “Dressember” doesn’t mean guys aren’t a celebrated part of our advocate community, too. If you’re a man dressing up for dignity, join our network of males fighting the good fight against human trafficking.
Lairs Johnston, Group Admin
I'm passionate about standing up against injustice at all costs and protecting kids. I have been able to advocate with Dressember for a few years now and want to see more men join in with us. I have been a licensed foster parent, I've been to El Salvador, but I grew up in Seattle and I've never been to the space needle. I also have a slight Diet Mountain Dew addiction, but I'm working on it.
If you’re not an educator, a student, a mom or a man, we’d love to connect with you on our general Dressember advocates Facebook group. We’re so excited to get to know you better!
